How to Choose UK Travel Insurance
Understand the Reciprocal Healthcare Agreement
New Zealand has a reciprocal healthcare agreement with the United Kingdom, which entitles Australians to some medical treatment under the NHS during their stay. However, this agreement does not extend to all medical treatment (like private treatment or prescription costs). Comprehensive travel insurance – or medical only, at the very least – remains essential and should not be skipped simply because some NHS treatment is available.
Travelling Beyond the UK into Europe
Many Kiwis visiting the UK take the opportunity to explore Europe, and it’s important to ensure your policy covers every destination on your itinerary as the NHS reciprocal healthcare agreement does not extend beyond the UK. Some insurers price the UK separately from broader Europe, so if your trip is limited to the UK only, it’s worth checking whether selecting the UK specifically rather than a Europe-wide region saves you money on your premium.
Youth Mobility Scheme Visa Holders
If you’re heading to the UK on a two-year Youth Mobility Scheme visa, standard travel insurance policies may not meet your needs – most single trip policies cover a maximum of 12 months. Some insurers offer long-stay policies covering up to 18 months or two years. To be eligible for the visa, you must hold a New Zealand passport, be aged between 18 and 35, have no dependent children, hold a return ticket or sufficient funds for a return fare, and have a minimum of £2,350 in savings.
Pre-Existing Medical Conditions
Pre-existing medical conditions must be declared when purchasing UK travel insurance. Some conditions may be covered automatically, while others require a medical assessment or attract an additional premium. Always declare all relevant conditions upfront as failure to disclose a pre-existing condition could result in a related claim being rejected at a time when you most need support.
Key Exclusions to Be Aware Of
UK travel insurance comes with important exclusions worth understanding before you travel. Claims will generally not be paid if you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident, if your belongings were left unattended, or if you fail to report theft or loss to the relevant authority within 24 hours. High-risk activities (including rock climbing where ropes are required and open water sailing) may also be excluded from standard cover.
Tips to Reduce Your Premium
There are several practical ways to reduce the cost of UK travel insurance. If your trip is limited to the UK, selecting it as a standalone destination rather than grouping it under Europe may result in a lower premium with some insurers. Travelling with a partner or friend? A joint policy is often cheaper than purchasing individually. Increasing your excess can also reduce your premium, and frequent travellers may find that an annual multi-trip policy offers better value than purchasing a separate policy for each trip.
