Travel insurance is extremely important; without the right cover you could get stranded overseas, have to foot a $50,000 medical bill, or lose thousands of dollars if your trip gets cancelled and you can’t claim it back.

So, when you’re reading our editorial content, you deserve to know exactly who wrote them and how we make sure what you’re reading is accurate and up to date.

Who we are

Compare Travel Insurance is a New Zealand comparison site dedicated exclusively to travel insurance. Every month, we help thousands of New Zealanders compare benefits and features from the country’s leading insurers – and because travel insurance is all we do, we know it inside out.

We do make a small commission when you buy a policy through our site, but that never influences what we write or how we rate a product.

Oh, and our comparison service is completely free to use.

Who writes our content

Our writers are a mix of travel insurance specialists, former journalists and personal finance writers.

How we verify accuracy

What an insurer says about their own product and what’s actually in the fine print aren’t always the same thing. When we write about a policy’s features, inclusions or exclusions, we go to the Policy Wording directly.

Our fact-checking process includes:

  • Checking all product details against the current Policy Wording from the insurer.
  • Cross-referencing pricing and coverage claims against data pulled directly from our comparison tool.
  • Citing data only from credible, authoritative sources such as FMA (Financial Markets Authority) and Stats NZ.

Our core editorial principles

Everything we publish is guided by core values:

  • Honesty: We’re not here to push you toward any particular policy, including the brands we have a commercial relationship with. Only you know what’s right for you. Our job is to give you the information you need to make that call yourself.
  • Accuracy: We only publish what we can verify.
  • Transparency: We tell you how we make money, who wrote the content and where the information comes from. And our star ratings aren’t decided by us; they’re based entirely on reviews from real customers.
  • Relevance: We write for Kiwi travellers. That means we focus on what actually matters for people travelling from New Zealand, not generic global advice.
  • Helpfulness: The goal is always to make a complicated decision easier. Not to impress you with industry jargon.

Who reviews our content

Every piece of content is reviewed by a senior team member for accuracy, clarity and compliance with our obligations as a licensed financial comparison service.

How we make money (and why it doesn’t affect what we write)

We earn a small commission when you purchase a travel insurance policy through our site.

Some insurers pay us more than others, but that has no bearing on how we write about or rate any product.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Insurers cannot pay to be featured more favourably in our editorial guides.
  • Our comparisons are based on policy features and value, not commercial relationships.
  • Products marked as “sponsored” or “promoted” are clearly labelled as such and are separate from our editorial content.

In the interest of full transparency: Compare Travel Insurance is owned and operated by CoverDirect NZ Limited (INC 3526051). CoverDirect NZ Limited has directors, shareholders or entities in common with 1Cover, TINZ and Zoom Travel Insurance. Those policies appear on our site in the same way as any other insurer; they receive no preferential treatment.

A note on general advice

The content on Compare Travel Insurance is general in nature. It does not take into account your individual circumstances, travel plans, health history or financial situation.

Before purchasing any travel insurance policy, we encourage you to read the Policy Wording in full and consider whether the product is right for you. If you need personal advice, speak with a licensed insurance adviser.
