Security when Purchasing Online

There has been substantial growth in e-commerce which is set to continue. With this growth, comes both increased security and rise in fraudulent attempts with web activities.

When purchasing online, it is important to check that the site you're providing your personal details to is a secure and trustworthy website. Here are some tips on what to look for.

  • Hacker safe:
  • Look for a secure icon, usually a small closed padlock or key symbol at the bottom of the screen (sometimes the top). This indicates that the information you enter is being encrypted, preventing other computers impersonating your computer and blocks third parties reading or changing your info as it travels through the internet. You can usually click on this icon for verification.

  • Data protection:
  • On the web page where you enter your credit card or other personal information, look for an "s" after http in the web address of that page. Also make sure there is a tiny closed padlock in the address bar, or on the lower right corner of the window as shown in the examples below.

  • Personal information:
  • Check that your personal information is used primarily for the creation and operation of your insurance policy and not divulged to third parties. If in doubt, read the Privacy Policy on the provider's website.

If you are uncomfortable finalising your credit card details online, check whether you are able to contact the company directly.
